After the rising number of identified Coronavirus cases, at least seven schools across the United Kingdom have closed temporarily, largely due to pupil and faculty infection. On 6th March, Ofqual, The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, published a statement advising the public to ‘prepare for exams and other assessments as normal’ but also that they are preparing for multiple scenarios going forwards.

  1. STAY UP TO DATE

If you or your children are preparing for exams, ensure that you are regularly checking the gov.uk and related news websites to remain knowledgeable about how to proceed. Other students, including those applying to university, can find out information on exam specific sites such as UCAS.com.

  1. FOLLOW SCHOOL’S INSTRUCTIONS

As the virus continues to spread, schools are forced to prepare contingency plans as advised by gov.uk, focusing on ‘fairness’ to students at this time. The Independent reported an interview with the head of Brighton College, Richard Cairns, who explained how the school ‘has written to parents about plans to use online teaching platforms if they are forced to close for a long period of time’. Going forwards, schools will be informed by Ofqual, who have ensured that they ‘will issue updated advice if necessary, giving schools and colleges as much notice as possible’.

  1. PREPARE FOR EXAMS AS NORMAL

According to The Independent, a government spokesperson commented that responses should be ‘reasonable, proportionate and based on the latest scientific evidence’ and so it is important to continue with exam preparation with little panic.
