The proportion of students achieving grade A or higher at A-level has fallen to its lowest level since 2007. The BBC reported that this year 25.5% got the top grades, while this percentage was 25.3% in 2007.

The proportion of students achieving the top grades at A-level has fallen to its lowest level for more than a decade, this year's results show.

This year some 25.5% got an A grade or higher - the lowest level since 2007 when it was 25.3%.

Girls narrowly reclaimed the lead from boys, with 25.5% achieving A* and A grades compared with 25.4% of boys.

The overall pass rate remains the same as last year at 97.6% for students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

However, in the independent sector, 2019 has been the strongest year for many schools.

University watchdog set to intervene over unconditional offers, as students receive their A-level results

The university watchdog is poised to intervene over unconditional offers, as the Office for Students chief has vowed “we can and we will” use regulatory powers to crack down on the worst offenders.

Nicola Dandridge said the regulator will act where they find evidence of “improper use” of unconditional offers, where students are offered places irrespective of their A-level grades.

It comes after the higher education minister Jo Johnson said that the rise in unconditional offers - and universities’ rush to get “students through the door”-  is undermining faith in the UK’s education system.

A quarter of students now receive at least one unconditional offer, the latest figures show, despite Government pressure on universities to crack down on the practice.

The proportion of school leavers who were handed at least one university place regardless of their A-level results reached a record high this year, an analysis last month by the admissions service Ucas shows.
