Elstree School

Woolhampton, Reading, Berkshire, RG7 5TD, United Kingdom

Elstree is a very impressive school. The main building is a Georgian house, set in beautiful grounds (150 acres) of lawns and parkland, with its own golf course and extensive playing fields. All the lessons take place away from the main school building although the boarding takes place in the house itself. This is so that the boarders feel that they can go ‘home’ after school, rather than ‘stay behind’ after the day students have left.

There are roughly 240 children in the school with 150 day pupils and 90 boarders. The school was all boys until recently and boys still make up the majority of pupils, although the balance is rapidly shifting.

Elstree aims to realise the highest academic expectations for all pupils within a framework of proven learning techniques and innovative and exciting teaching methods. Lessons take place six days a week from Year 4 with an average class size of 13 pupils. The timetable includes English, Mathematics, French, Science, Geography, History, Religious Studies, ICT, Art, Design Technology, Music, Physical Education and PSHE. Latin is introduced to all children in Year 6 and Greek for potential scholars in Year 7. Drama and Music are extremely popular and they write and produce many of their own musical.

This is a very successful school, which prides itself on allowing children to be children but also wants them to aim high. There is a real warmth in the school, very much led by the Head, who is incredibly enthusiastic about the school and very much at the heart of what happens. His own children went to the school and have gone on to great things.
